Lubing linear switches: was it worth two evenings?
I lubed 87 linear switches with Krytox 205g0 and a cheap switch opener. It took two evenings and one podcast season.
The difference in sound is real: less spring ping, a deeper and more uniform bottom-out. The difference in feel is smaller than forums suggest. If you type on a board with stabilizers that rattle, fix the stabilizers first; that alone gets you most of the way.
Tips I wish I had known
- Do not lube the legs of the stem. It makes the switch feel mushy.
- Thin coat on the springs, bag method works fine.
- Test five switches before committing to all of them.
